Obituary for Valerie Brown
Valerie Brown, 68, of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on February 26, 2025, at New York Presbyterian Hospital, after bravely facing numerous health challenges. She was born on September 16, 1956, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Marcella Lewis Brown and Walter Jordan Brown Sr.
Valerie was a proud and determined woman, known for her vibrant personality and strong-willed nature. She received her education in the Long Creek community attending first grade at Pender County Training School and in Brooklyn, NY, where she attended a P.S.167, I.S. 210, and Pacific High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Long Island University. Her presence was unforgettable, always dressed to impress, and her legendary attention to detail made her a true showstopper.
Valerie spent many summers in Long Creek community, where she made lasting memories and earned the nickname "Heavy" from her Uncle Thurman. She was unapologetically herself, a force of nature with a heart full of warmth, infectious laughter, and a dazzling smile that lit up every room she entered.
She is survived by her sister, Vanessa Brown; brothers, David Anthony Brown and Walter Jordan Brown Jr.; nieces, Alexis, Lachelle, Cherise, and Shawanna; great-nephews, Isaac and Isiah; great-great-nephew, Mason; aunts, , Kathy, Judy, Helen, Dotti, and Rosetta; uncles, James, Hunter, and Henry; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 11:00-11:50 a.m., followed by the service at 12:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home Chapel, 810 W Wilmington St, Burgaw, North Carolina 28425. Interment will follow at St. Mark Cemetery in the Long Creek Community.
Valerie's spirit and love will remain with us always. May she rest in peace.
