Born on November 15, 1951, in Willard, North Carolina, Timothy’s journey was one of strength, principle, and enduring love for his family, his community, and the land that shaped him.

Timothy’s story began in the rich soils of North Carolina, where, from a young age, he grew attuned to the rhythms of farming, a calling that would shape his vocation and values for a lifetime. His life’s primary work was rooted in farming and agriculture, where he turned countless sunrises and long days into harvests not just of crops but of hope and perseverance. His devotion to the land was matched only by his commitment to justice and fairness, distinguishing himself as a civil rights activist and historian. Timothy conducted historical research with a deep sense of purpose, striving to illuminate the journeys and trials of those who came before him.

Timothy’s path led him to earn a degree at UNC Wilmington, forever cherishing the education that empowered his advocacy and enriched his work in both the fields and his research. He became a revered voice in social justice, launching landmark efforts such as the Black Farmers Discrimination Litigation in 1997 and marching shoulder to shoulder with icons like Ben Chambers during the civil rights era. Timothy’s vision and resolve were recognized when he was inducted into the Black Hall of Fame, a proud acknowledgment of a life spent in service to truth, dignity, and equality.

Though steadfast and serious in his cause, Timothy was a man alive with passion for life’s joys. Above all, he cherished moments spent with his beloved wife, Janice Pickford, who survives him, and with their children, Timothy C. Pigford, Jr., and Cornelius Pigford. With them, he celebrated small pleasures and forged deep bonds, none more cherished than their spirited conversations about Pittsburgh Steelers football, a hobby close to his heart. His love for the Steelers was legendary within the family, and he found delight in NFL seasons for the camaraderie and friendly debate it brought home. Even in his final days, Timothy’s warmth remained. It is remembered that peach cobbler was the last food he ate; he remarked with characteristic humor and longing that it was good, though he regretted not being able to enjoy more.

Timothy’s life was marked by milestones that resonate far beyond his immediate circle. A public viewing will be held at Roseville Missionary Baptist Church, 2870 Wilmington Hwy, Willard, NC 28478, on August 29, 2026, from 11:00 am to 11:50 am. The funeral service will follow immediately at 12:00 pm at the same location. Timothy Charles Pigford will be laid to rest at Newkirk Family Cemetery, 22455 US Highway 421, Willard, NC 28478.
