It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roscoe Earnell Watkins, Jr., affectionately known to many as Rocky squirrel, who left this world peacefully on July 15, 2026, at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Born on August 1, 1949, Roscoe’s seventy-six years were marked by steadfast devotion, gentle wisdom, and the kind of quiet strength that leaves indelible marks on every life he touched.

Roscoe was a man whose presence anchored those around him. His unwavering integrity, dependable spirit, and deep love for family defined him above all else. He was more than the roles he so faithfully fulfilled, as husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, he was comfort itself, a guiding hand through life’s storms, and the source of so many cherished memories. Those fortunate enough to know him knew the value of his thoughtful advice, his effortless ability to listen, and the sanctuary he offered simply by being present.

For many years, Roscoe dedicated himself to a career in truck driving, earning the respect and admiration of those he worked with through his diligence and commitment. His steady hands built not only a career, but a reputation of integrity and remarkable work ethic. Yet for Roscoe, no accomplishment was as treasured as the moments spent with family. The pride he took in his loved ones surpassed any accolade or recognition; it was evident in the way his face lit up at gatherings, his laughter during shared stories, and his unwavering support for each and every family member.

Beyond the open road, Roscoe found great joy outdoors and was a proud member of the Wild Side Hunting Club. Time spent in nature, whether hunting or basking in the company of lifelong friends, brought him peace and happiness. For Roscoe, these simple pleasures, storytelling by a campfire, quiet reflection in the woods, or the laughter shared after a successful hunt, wove the fabric of a life well-lived.

His presence was perhaps his greatest gift to his family. No matter the challenges of the day, Roscoe was there: offering advice, lending a helping hand, and building memories that will be treasured for generations. His grandchildren will remember him not just as a grandfather, but as a pillar of strength, a confidant, and a consistent source of love and encouragement. His legacy will echo within their hearts for years to come.

Roscoe was preceded in death by his loving wife of forty-three years, Gloria Watkins, his parents Roscoe and Jessie Mae Watkins, and his brother Ezzard L. Watkins. Their reunion in peace brings a measure of comfort amid our sorrow.

He is survived by his beloved children: Felicia Watkins (Alicia), Alicia Hooks Bynum (David), Alec Brockington (Samantha), and Daniel Brockington. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Porsha Moore, A’zaviah James, and Latoya Harris, and his great-grandchildren: Ja’Mari Butler, Julian Moore, Azyria Speller, and Amrias Speller. His siblings, Linda Thorpe (Joe), Barbara Watkins Samuel (Phil), Don Watkins (Joann), and Jessie Watkins, remain to honor his memory, as do a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends, including fellow members of the Wild Side Hunting Club, all of whom will forever cherish their moments with him.

Roscoe’s memory is held close by many, including Charlotte Holmes, Carolyn Pickett (Andre), Cordelia James (Steve), Mary Brick (Brian), Stacey Farrior, Mary Wooten (Bernie), Scottie Pickett, Sherby Graham (David), Peggy Boney (Eddie), Steve Pickett, Cathy Pickett, Rosa Watkins, and Belinda Watkins. The bonds shared and lives touched by Roscoe stand as a testament to a life built on love, faith, and unwavering devotion to those who meant the most.

Though our hearts are broken by his absence, we find comfort in the enduring legacy Roscoe leaves behind, a legacy of love, strength, and faith that will continue to guide and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

To celebrate Roscoe’s life and pay tribute to his memory, friends and family are invited to a visitation on July 25, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dunn Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 810 W Wilmington St, Burgaw, NC 28425. A Celebration of Life will follow on July 26, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Greater St Paul United Holy Church, 1300 Webbtown Road, Maple Hill, NC 28454.

As we gather to honor him and share our stories, may we find comfort in remembering the warmth of Roscoe’s love, the steadiness of his support, and the countless ways he made our lives brighter.
