With heavy hearts, we honor and remember the beautiful life of Linda Faye Hayes, affectionately known to many as Faye, who entered into eternal rest on July 12, 2026, at the age of 68. Born on Valentine’s Day in Atkinson, North Carolina, Faye’s very presence was a gift, a testament to the love and devotion that would come to define her place in this world.
Linda was the cherished daughter of Ethel J. Carter and the late James O. Carter. Her upbringing began in the warmth of family in Atkinson and continued in Newark, New Jersey, where she became a proud graduate of Barringer High School. It was there that her lifelong foundation in family, friendship, and service was built, and where her legacy would grow in countless quiet, meaningful ways.
A gentle soul with an inner fire, Linda’s reserved manner was complemented by a fun-loving spirit only her closest friends and loved ones could truly appreciate. Those who knew her best recall how her laughter could light up a room and how she found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved to dance, gather with loved ones, and embark on spontaneous adventures, from exhilarating trips to Atlantic City to relaxing days spent in Pennsylvania. Her resourcefulness and independent spirit ensured that no obstacle could keep her from being with those she loved or doing what brought her happiness.
From an early age, Linda’s capacity for compassion was unmistakable. As a high school student, she volunteered as a Candy Striper at Martland Hospital in Newark, tending to those in need with patience and empathy. This early act of service marked the beginning of a lifelong career defined by kindness and care. Throughout her journey, Linda touched many lives, whether as a Residential Service Worker at Woodbridge State School, where she brought comfort to residents; as a devoted Home Health Aide, helping individuals preserve their dignity; or as a vital presence in the lives of hundreds of children as both a Bus Attendant for the Newark Board of Education and a School Food Service Assistant for the South Orange Board of Education.
Her dedication never wavered, and her work was always more than a job. For over two decades, she ensured the safety and well-being of students every single day, offering a reassuring smile and a watchful eye on their journeys to and from school. Linda brought warmth, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to every life she touched, leaving a legacy of service and love within her community.
Above all else, Linda was devoted to her family. She showed us all that family, above everything, is life’s greatest blessing and that love can speak loudest in the quietest moments. Her gentle guidance, laughter, and enduring support will continue to echo through the generations.
Linda leaves to cherish her memory her loving children, LaShanda Faye (Corey) Purkett and Ahmad Hayes; her beloved grandchildren, Vinaziah, Kemonie, Keyaziah, and Taquan; and her four treasured great-grandchildren. She is survived by her devoted mother, Ethel J. Carter; her sisters, Kimberly M. Coles, Lisa E. (Floyd) Roberson, and Yvette T. (Kasim) Kearney; her brothers, Jerome (Pamela) Carter and Lydell S. (Elizabeth) Carter. Linda’s love radiated far and wide, touching the lives of her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other extended family, and dear friends. She was welcomed into eternal rest by her father, James O. Carter.
As we reflect on Linda’s remarkable journey, we hold close the lesson she so gently instilled, that love endures, binding each of us together, even in loss. Through her quiet strength, steadfast presence, and generous heart, she sowed seeds of compassion and unity that will blossom for years to come. Today, may we honor Linda by loving one another as she loved us, fully, faithfully, and without condition.
A viewing to celebrate Linda’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 810 W Wilmington St, Burgaw, NC 28425. Following the service, Linda will be laid to rest at the Hayes Family Cemetery, 556 Hayes Road, Atkinson, North Carolina, returning home to the place of her birth, forever surrounded by those who love her.
Though Linda’s journey among us has ended, her love is everlasting, a gentle thread forever weaving our hearts together.
