Obituary

Lillie Mae Herring Martin, born Boney, transitioned into eternal life on January 18, 2026, at the age of 90 in Wilmington, North Carolina. She was born on October 4, 1935, in Duplin County, where she would later become a cherished figure in her community.

Lillie's life was one defined by her faith and dedication to helping others. A god-fearing woman, she found fulfillment in fellowshipping with friends and loved ones. Lillie's entrepreneurial spirit shined brightly as she became the first African American businesswoman in Duplin County, establishing her own clothing boutique on Main Street in Wallace. This venture not only marked a significant achievement in her life but also paved the way for future generations.

Throughout her life, Lillie was an advocate for the community, often reaching out to those in need. She opened her heart and home as a foster mother, embodying the spirit of compassion and nurturing that would leave a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Her legacy lives on through her beloved children: Arnetta Hatten, Angela Bannerman, James Herring, Felix Herring, Tawanna Powell, Tasha Herring, and Jamie Jones. Lillie is also survived by a myriad of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Funeral Service/ Interment/ Viewing

A homegoing celebration will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Wallace First Assembly of God, located at 212 West Main Street, Wallace, NC 28466. Interment will follow at Duplin Memorial Garden on Highway 117 in Teachey. Relatives and friends are invited to a walkthrough viewing from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at Dunn Funeral Home Chapel, 810 West Wilmington Street, Burgaw, NC 28425.

Lillie was known for her love of travel, shopping, and her remarkable homemade biscuits, which won the hearts of many. She will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but also for the warmth and kindness she extended to everyone around her.
