Dr. Irene Graham Van Travis of Rocky Point, NC transitioned on Friday, June 10, 2022. Dr. Van Travis was born April 19, 1925 to Robert and Julia Powell Graham.

The Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 12PM at the Middle District Missionary Baptist Association, 1821 NC Highway 53, Burgaw. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington, NC.

The visitation/viewing will be 5PM to 6PM on Friday, June 17, 2022 followed by a Reflection Hour from 6PM to 7PM at Dunn Funeral Home Chapel.

Dr. Van Travis completed secondary school in Pender County; attended Elizabeth City Teachers College (now Elizabeth City State University); received her master of education from Temple University and her Dr. of philosophy from the Union Institute. Irene Van Travis was truly a servant of God! She served God through her family, her profession and her community. She was instrumental in starting and maintaining a family reunion for 37 years. In June 2021, the family established her decades long dream of creating a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit to assist high school graduates. Additionally she established and endowed a scholarship at Elizabeth City State University to support students majoring in special education. Dr. Irene was preceded in death by her husband William Van Travis, her siblings and parents. She leaves to cherish her memory nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, relatives and associates.
