Mr. Herbert Mott, Sr.
, the son of the late Bradley Mott and Mary Treadwell Mott was born on January 19, 1935 in Atkinson, NC. He peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

During his childhood Herbert was a member of Hawes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Atkinson, North Carolina. He attended Pender County Training School and graduated in 1955. He left Atkinson to serve in the Army. Once his Army Tour was complete, Herbert went on to attend Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and graduated in 1962. While attending ECSU, he met Dorothy Jenkins who became his wife of over 60 years.
Upon graduating, Herbert and Dorothy moved to Portsmouth, VA where he worked his entire career with the Portsmouth Public School System. His last position with the school system was as Vice Principal of I.C. Norcom High school where he worked until his retirement in 1991. He then went on to serve on the Portsmouth City School Board 1998 to 2002. Herbert received two Master's Degrees from Hampton University. He was a member of Fellowship United Church Of Christ in Chesapeake, VA where he was a Deacon Emeritus.
He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy Jenkins Mott of Portsmouth, VA; four children LaGreta Dennis (Jack) of Fort Washington, MD; Herbert Mott, Jr. (Kimberly) of Fort Washington, MD; Cecil Mott (Cheryl) of Erial, New Jersey; Bradford Mott of Portsmouth, VA; eight grandchildren Justin Mott, Brandon Dennis, Marcus Dennis, Joshua Mott(Alejandra), Brandon Bolden, Jayden Mott, Ryan Mott and Holly Mott; four sisters Josephine Alexander of New Jersey, Mary Lee (Andrew) Murphy of North Carolina, Dorothy Robinson of North Carolina and Ernell Mott of Texas. He was preceded in death by his siblings; Robert Mott, Eugene Mott, Elizabeth Mott, Addie Davis, Fred Mott, Lena Bedard, Henrietta Corbett, Lillie Mae Beatty, Isabelle Rodgers, David Mott, Willie Mott, Rean Ann Corbett, and Lottie Mott. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews that he loved dearly; his fellow ESCU Alumni; and close friends.
