Gwen Newton, age 60, transitioned peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Jemika Newton (Tiffany), Kevin Newton, and Anthony Eakins; her cherished grandchildren, Jakell, Bri, and Zae; and her siblings, Sylvia Burton (Milton), Brenda Hayes (Kenny), Cynthia Thompson (Bennie), Carol Highsmith (Larry), Wendell Newton, Barry Newton (Tammy), Jeffery Newton (LaGreta), Myra Seabrooks, Rodney Newton (Julliette), Linda Newton, Flora Murphy, Joyce Carter, Betty Sykes, Harry Hayes, Henry Hayes, Jonathan Hayes, and Helen Haynes. Special niece LaTorial Lofton, along with many nieces and nephews, also mourn her passing, as do her dear friends, Diane Armstrong and Catherine Pigford.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Roseville Missionary Baptist Church, 2870 Wilmington Highway, Willard, NC 28478. Interment will follow in the Geneva Newton Cemetery off of Highway 421, Willard, NC. 

Viewing will take place prior to the service from 1:00 pm to 1:50 pm at Roseville Missionary Baptist Church Sanctuary.

Known for her radiant smile that could light up a room, Gwen cherished spending time with family, telling jokes, and enjoying music, especially gospel. Her compassion and willingness to help others were hallmarks of her character. 

The family will receive guests at the home of her son Jemika.
