Dorothy Corbett Hughes, lovingly known to many as “Aunt Dot,” passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 89.
Born on August 30, 1937, Dorothy was remembered as a sweet and loving person whose life reflected kindness, faith, and generosity. She loved worshipping the Lord and treasured the joy of fellowshipping with others. Gospel music held a special place in her heart, and those who knew her will remember the warmth she brought wherever she went.
Aunt Dot loved people deeply and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Her caring spirit and open heart made her a blessing to many. She also found happiness in the simple pleasures of life, especially working crossword puzzles and shopping. She enjoyed spending money on clothes and took delight in those moments that brought her joy.
Her life leaves behind a memory of love, devotion, and gentle strength. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and sharing in her kindness.
Aunt Dot loved people deeply and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at St. James A.M.E. Church, 1630 Over Lyon Road, Kelly, North Carolina 28448. Interment will follow in Bethel A.M.E. Church Cemetery, 71 Bethel Church Road, Currie, North Carolina 28435.
Viewing will be held prior to the service on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 1:50 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. James A.M.E. Church.
May her memory bring comfort to all who loved her.
The family will be receiving guest at the home of her nephew, David Beatty beginning Thursday through Saturday duting the hours of 5:00pm until 7:00pm.
