Dacquilla Smart

Dacquilla Smart, fondly known as "D," was born on April 21, 1940, in New Hanover County. He passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. His departure marks the loss of a truly remarkable individual whose intellect and talents enriched the lives of many.

Dacquilla was a musical genius, an epithet lovingly earned through his profound affinity for music. He delighted in singing and was adept at playing various instruments, finding joy and expression in the rhythms and melodies that resonated deeply within his soul. His passion extended to classical music, a genre he cherished and which offered him comfort and inspiration. Beyond music, "D" enjoyed watching old black-and-white television shows, a pastime that connected him to cherished memories and simpler times. He also loved game shows, particularly Jeopardy, embracing any challenge that would test his sharp mind and vast knowledge.

His love was not confined to his hobbies; he held dear his faith in God and his devoted family. Those who knew Dacquilla were touched by his warmth, intelligence, and unwavering spirit.

"D" is survived by his son, L.D. Walker;  grandchildren, Dr. Asia-La'Rae M. Walker and Kameron D. Walker;  great-grandchildren, J'Mya Keith, Jeri'Mia Keith, Ja'Kirah Keith; and a great-great-grandchild, Laila Keith. He also leaves behind his brother, Chevalier "Chuck" Shiver(Juanita), and  nieces Andreas Shiver, Narrissa Shiver, and Laccia Shiver. In addition, he is remembered by a host of cousins, relatives, and friends who carry forward his legacy.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the Dunn Funeral Home Chapel located at 810 West Wilmington Street, Burgaw, NC 28425. The family respectfully requests potted plants or garden dishes in remembrance of Dacquilla’s enduring love for nature and growth.

Dacquilla Smart's life was a testament to the power of intellect, creativity, faith, and love. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit and the memories he created will continue to inspire all who knew him.
