Mr. Cozell McQueen, Jr passed away on August 5, 2026, in Durham, NC. Born on January 18, 1962, in France, Mr. McQueen led a distinguished and meaningful life, defined by dedication, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to his values. His journey was guided by the words from 2 Timothy 4:7 — “I Have Fought the Good Fight, I Have Finished the Race, I Have Kept the Faith.”

An alumnus of North Carolina State University, Mr. McQueen built a foundation for excellence, both academically and athletically, during his time at the university. As a proud member of the 1983 National Championship basketball team, he reached one of his proudest accomplishments early in his career, helping secure a historic victory that remains etched in the annals of college sports.

Following his collegiate success, Mr. McQueen advanced to the professional level as a basketball player. His presence on the court combined talent, determination, and a deep respect for the game. His achievements were marked by a tenacity that inspired teammates and fans alike. Throughout his athletic career, Mr. McQueen’s commitment to hard work and teamwork left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.

Outside of his career, Mr. McQueen treasured the relationships he built. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Reverend MisChella McKoy McQueen, whose support and partnership were central throughout his life. Their bond was a source of strength and joy. He also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Cozell (Raven) McQueen III, Chaz (Dr. Ashley) McQueen, and Dr. Chyna McQueen-Lane (Chris Lane), along with extended family, friends, former teammates, colleagues, and countless others whose lives he touched throughout his journey.

A Public Viewing will take place on Sunday, August 16, 2026, during the hours of 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A viewing prior to the service will take place on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. The Celebration of Life Service will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, located at 501 Red Cross St., Wilmington, NC 28401. 

Mr. McQueen’s legacy will be remembered for succinct clarity, much like the way he lived his life, purposeful and direct. He impacted many through his professional achievements and personal interactions, carrying himself with quiet dignity and humility.

Mr. Cozell McQueen, Jr’s life was one filled with achievement, resilience, and grace. His contributions to the sport and the community will continue to resonate, and he will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
