On May 9, 2026, at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC, she peacefully departed from this life, leaving behind a legacy rich in love, kindness, and devotion.
A woman of remarkable warmth and generosity, Classie Mae was known for cultivating an atmosphere of welcoming embrace, a place where friends and family could gather without fear of judgment. Her home was often the cradle of joyful entertainment, where laughter flowed freely, and every visitor was cherished. Her capacity to care knew no bounds, as she offered her assistance to those in need with a spirit so selfless it inspired all who crossed her path.
Her family was the very heart of her existence; she never faltered in expressing her love and steadfast support for them. To her four children—Gregory Bannerman, Avery Bannerman, Vanessa Taylor (Gerald), Althea Smith (Eric), and Tawana Bannerman—she was a pillar of strength and tenderness. Her enduring legacy extends to twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren, each a living testament to her nurturing spirit. In addition to her immediate kin, she is fondly remembered by her brother, Alan D. Bannerman, and a host of nieces, nephews, and countless relatives and friends who held her dearly.
SERVICE DETAILS
Those wishing to honor Classie Mae’s memory will gather for her Homegoing Celebration on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 12 noon, at The Middle District Baptist Association along Highway 53 West in Burgaw, NC. Following this solemn yet joyous occasion, her interment will take place at the Pike Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, also in Burgaw.
A viewing for relatives and friends will be held during the hours of 6:00pm -8:00pm on, Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Dunn Funeral Home Chapel, located at 810 West Wilmington Street, Burgaw, NC 28425.
Classie Mae Bannerman’s passage from this world leaves an indelible mark of love and grace. Her free-hearted nature, her boundless compassion, and the sanctuary of peace she created for those around her stand as a beacon to all who were privileged to know her.
