Elder Barbara Bassett, affectionately known as "Winkie," was a cherished soul who graced this world with her vibrant spirit from July 5, 1958, until her departure on January 1, 2026 at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center of Wilmington, NC. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Winkie lived a life that was a testament to her faith and dedication, leaving behind a legacy that will be treasured by all who knew her.
As a devoted caregiver, she earned her Bachelor's degree in religious studies, embodying compassion and professionalism in every interaction throughout her career. Her warm smile and kind heart made her an invaluable presence to many, and she wore her title of Elder with great pride. Often described as a fun spirit and a force to be reckoned with, Barbara remained faithful to Christ, spreading love and encouragement wherever she went.
Winkie's interests were as varied as the colorful arrangements requested by her family for her memorial. She found joy in playing games on her phone, watching African movies, and cheering on her beloved Dallas Cowboys, embracing every moment to its fullest.
She is survived by her beloved children: Deacon Shaun Bassett, Minister William Bassett, Charlie Bassett, Jr., and Brian Bassett Arnold, also known as "Lydell" Booth. Each of them carries forward her legacy of strength, faith, and unwavering love.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Bassett Sr., along with many loved ones who will reunite with her in spirit.
The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Barbara's remarkable life at Dunn Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Burgaw, NC. A viewing will take place on January 12, 2026, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Later, a Memorial Service will honor her memory on January 17, 2026, at Refuge Temple in Warfield, VA, beginning at 1:00 PM and concluding at 2:00 PM.
