Andrew James
Murphy
Jan 29, 1943 — Jun 19, 2026
Andrew James Murphy, born on January 29, 1943 in Pender County, brought warmth, devotion, and steadfast love to all who had the privilege of knowing him. On June 19, 2026, at Novant New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington, Andrew departed this world, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to echo through each life he touched.
Andrew's story is one marked by resilience, purpose, and the quiet strength for which he became known throughout his life. Affectionately described as the handyman of the community, Andrew was the person neighbors sought out when something needed fixing—not just around the house, but often in matters of the heart. His helping hands, quick smile, and calm presence were the foundation of countless friendships.
Family was always at the very center of Andrew’s life. He cherished his role as a devoted father to his daughter, Valdine Murphy, and found deep joy in the company of his grandson, Malik Hinton, and his great-granddaughter, Amira Hinton. With unwavering love and pride, he watched the generations that followed, nurturing and supporting them in every way he could.
Andrew also shared an extraordinary bond with his siblings: sisters Celia Newkirk, Edna Andrews, and Abigail Freeman, and brothers Arnold Murphy, Ellery Murphy, and Fabian Murphy. Together, they created a web of memories and support, bound together by laughter, hard work, and a commitment to one another that stood the test of time.
His loving personality extended to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends—each finding in him a gentle giant who would listen before offering advice, often weaving those conversations into one of his beloved stories. His storytelling—simple yet profound—reflected the care with which he regarded the world around him.
Andrew’s hands told the tale of a life well lived—hardworking and steadfast. Known as a self-made farmer, he filled his days tending to chickens and other animals, tilling the land with a diligence surpassed only by his love for family and community. Cooking was another labor of love, often bringing loved ones together around his table, where the food was matched only by the feeling of togetherness.
